There were many early Christian martyrs named Valentine, but St Valentine's day did not become associated with lovers till the 14th Century when the tradition of courtly love was represented in literature of the day.

In the 18th Century lovers exchanged gifts and cards which became known as Valentines.

So if you want treat someone you love, head for the shop which is where my hearts are.
