results
so, many weeks later I am sharing some results with you. They didn't come out well, or at least nowhere near as good as I had hoped, but I have to remind myself these were my first attempts at mugs for over 20 years and a first attempt at slab built ones.
I have to say though that I learned a lot. Both about myself and the materials I was using. I had forgotten how messy I can be when making things. Precision with clay does not come easily to me and although I finally conquered it when making my clocks, it took years of practise. I had forgotten that. Of course it doesn't help that Sarah Pike has also spent years developing her style and so has had plenty of practise and therefore SHE MAKES IT LOOK SOOO EASY ! I had also forgotten how much I dislike working with terracotta clay. It stains everything. I washed my table 4 times afterwards and I still keep finding bits of red everywhere. And then theres the glazing. I chose to use some brush on glazes, just because I had them. I now realise a matt dolomite glaze that I could have dunked would have been much better.
Anyhow heres a couple of my results, judge for yourself, I think I need a lot more practise!
the white mug was patterned with clay stamps and the fishes were cut out of a cardboard template and then rolled onto the clay. Mugs were formed around a Pringles box.
